Miguel Littín - Alsino and the Condor/Alsino y el cóndor
Yeah, Gandhi was an unbelievably selfish individual. My biggest reason for losing respect for him, though, was that he criticized the Jews for defending themselves against the Holocaust — he insisted that they should have committed public mass suicide in order to “shame” the Germans instead of fighting back.
…. In order to shame the Germans? WTF? The Germans wouldn’t’ve been shamed - they’d’ve been thrilled to get their way so easily!
Gandhi’s exact words were: “But the Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher’s knife. They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs. As it is, they succumbed anyway in their millions.” He also wrote an open letter to the British people in 1940 telling them to surrender to the Axis even if it meant accepting genocide:
“I would like you to lay down the arms you have as being useless for saving you or humanity. You will invite Herr Hitler and Signor Mussolini to take what they want of the countries you call your possessions. Let them take possession of your beautiful island, with your many beautiful buildings. You will give all these but neither your souls, nor your minds. If these gentlemen choose to occupy your homes, you will vacate them. If they do not give you free passage out, you will allow yourself, man, woman and child, to be slaughtered, but you will refuse to owe allegiance to them.”
he was also anti-black (lost all respect for him after reading how he treated sub-saharan africans).
read this. everyone needs to know gandhi’s “true colors”.
Ghandi was a pedophile, to boot.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MY ENTIRE LIFE THANK YOU
I CANNOT FUCKING STAND THE WAY HE IS PORTRAYED
HE WAS AN ABUSER WHO HIT HIS WIFE AND HIS DAUGHTERS ALSO
He also refused his wife medication that would have saved her life [for religious reasons], but when he himself was in a similar position decided that it was okay to make an exception.
He was extremely misogynist, in fact he undermined any progress that might have been made in women’s rights in India. He was also racist against Black people in South Africa. He was deeply hypocritical in many ways.
"The difference between a prostitute and a woman using contraceptives is only this- the former sells her body to many men and the latter sells it one man." - Gandhi
Nooooo Gandhi, what happened.
Reblogging again cuz it’s so good
"The goal is not to turn kids into your kind of adult, but rather, better adults than you have been. Progress happens because new generations grow and develop and become better than the previous ones.”
From Adora Svitak’s talk “What adults can learn from kids.” In her talk, Adora makes a case for why adults shouldn’t underestimate kids. And they shouldn’t. Kids are doing amazing things. Let’s just take a second to think about how Adora organized her first TEDxYouth event when she was just 12.
This weekend, young people around the world are attending, organizing, speaking at, and watching TEDxYouthDay events — TEDx events dedicated to the ingenuity of kids worldwide. Every year we’re taken aback by the amazing things that come out of these events, and we think you should be, too. Find a TEDxYouthDay event near you to attend or watch live online here.
There is literally nothing better than a sexy, badass lady.
CHING MOTHERFUCKING SHIH
This lady was such a badass, I can’t count the ways, but let’s try.
She got married to an already successful pirate, Zheng Yi, and took over when he died. She was crazy strict to keep an iron fist over her fleet of pirates, and the punishments for stepping out of line were brutal. If you stole or looted from a town that provided assistance or tribute to the pirate fleet, Ching would chop your fucking head off with a battle axe and dump your lifeless body in the ocean. If you stole from the pirate treasury, or she thought you were stealing from the pirate treasury, Ching would chop your fucking head off dump your lifeless body in the ocean. Raping any captured female prisoners was punishable by immediate death. Fuck, if you had consensual sex while on duty you got your head chopped off and the woman was chucked off the boat no matter where they were at. Ching wasn’t fucking around, and she wanted to make damn sure you weren’t fucking around when you should have been working.
Two years after she took over, she got so notorious for ransacking towns and taking taxes on them that she pissed off the entire Chinese government, and sent out a massive fleet to bring her in line. Most pirates probably would’ve said this was out of their pay grade and taken off to hide out or ransack some other country.
Ching Shih said fuck that.
She not only faced them head on, she wiped the floor with them, killing hundreds and capturing sixty-something ships from the Imperial Fleet. Prisoners were given the choice of joining up or being executed on the spot. The Admiral of the Chinese navy, Kwo Lang, was so afraid of being captured by her or going back to admit he’d been beaten by her that he committed suicide.
For the next two years, Ching Shih not only kept on pirating, she fought off Chinese forces as well as Dutch and British warships that the navy called in to help. Finally the government gave up and offered her amnesty as well as amnesty for her then SEVENTEEN THOUSAND crewman. Ching Shih got to keep all her plunder, so she retired to the countryside where she opened up a brothel and lived until she was 69.
tldr: I’ve come to terms with the reality that I’ll never be as terrifyingly badass as this woman was.
i will be as badass as she
You know, I heard of her, but I’d either forgotten or never heard that she grew old and retired having never been brought down or defeated ever.
She won being a pirate.
She got history’s high score.
Some 40 Black models, most of them women, have staged a topless protest in Rio de Janeiro against the low presence of Afro-Brazilians on fashion catwalks.
"What strikes you, your racism or me?" one of the female demonstrators wrote on her chest during the protest late Wednesday timed to coincide with Rio Fashion Week.
The demonstration also coincided with the signing of a deal between the Fashion Week organizers and the Rio ombudsman’s office setting a 10 percent quota for Black models in fashion shows, the G1 news website reported.
"This agreement crowns a joint initiative that can open a space that does not yet exist," said Moises Alcuna, a spokesman for Educafro, a civil rights group championing the labor and educational rights of Black people and indigenous people.
More than half of Brazil’s 200 million people are of African descent, the world’s second largest Black population after that of Nigeria.
But Afro-Brazilians are faced with widespread racial inequality.
"If we are buying clothes, why can’t we parade in the (fashion) shows," asked a 15-year-old model taking part in the protest. "Does that mean that only white women can sell and the rest of us can only buy?"
"Claiming to showcase Brazilian fashion without the real Brazilians amounts to showing Brazilian fashion (only) with white models," said Jose Flores, a 25-year-old former model who now works in advertising.
After 13 years of debate, President Dilma Rousseff last year signed a controversial law that reserves half of seats in federal universities to public school students, with priority given to Afro-Brazilians and indigenous people.
In June 2009, the Sao Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW)— Latin America’s premier fashion event — for the first time imposed quotas requiring at least 10 percent of the models to be Black or indigenous.
Previously, only a handful of Black models featured among the 350 or so that sashayed down the catwalk — usually less than three percent.
But in 2010, the 10 percent quota was removed, after a conservative prosecutor deemed it unconstitutional.

this is the whitest bullshit i can’t breathe wow
'it has nothing to do with race' really ???? when the physical objectification of BLACK WOMEN was all up in your video?? slow-mo shots of black women shaking their asses, close-ups of black women's crotches, and you're gonna say that it has nothing to do with race? i can't even form words at how utterly privileged this entire response is. it's not satire if you don't condemn it within the context of your material. it's not satire if you're doing literally the exact same thing as the people you're calling out.
people are offended because you fucked up big time and you’re gonna cover your ears because your white privilege lets you get away with it. you’ve pulled racist shit before and you’re pulling it now.
(Let me just restate and amend my feelings about this)
No. No. No. No. NO.
Of course we know she didn’t INTEND to offend anyone, but she did offend some people otherwise she wouldn’t have felt the need to make these statements. If people made their views clear that they did not appreciate certain aspects of her video and/or lyrics, don’t say “I’m not going to apologise because I think that would imply that I’m guilty of something”, because that trivializes the feelings of those who complained.
We know she didn’t want to make it about race, but that’s the issue that came up, so own up to it and say I’m sorry because if she were dealing with the objectification with women in today’s pop culture, why did the video for the most part look like a rap video? Why didn’t she take a shot at how women are photoshopped to unbelievable extents? Why didn’t she take a shot at how “virginal” women are coveted like when Britney Spears was starting out and the media was all up in her sex life? And like, okay, I get the Robin Thicke thing— that was obvious. But if you are decrying objectification in pop, why were you using mostly black women to prove your point? And saying “ask the ladies yourselves”, is basically saying “look, I’m cool with a couple black women, therefore I can speak for EVERY black woman who complained and say that what you’re feeling is an overreaction.” If black women were saying I don’t like what you did, just freakin’ apologize.
Like imagine if I went to go do a video in the early 90s talking about misogyny in music videos and I focused on the hair metal bands in which white women were draped over car hoods (Whitesnake), white women were paraded in skimpy bikinis (Van Halen on more than one account) and talked about cherry pie as a euphemism to vagina (Warrant). And then people complained that I was focusing on one problematic aspect of music and said “why didn’t you point out BBD’s ‘Do Me’ or ‘Poison’ videos”, and then I said well, it wasn’t my intention to make white women sexual objects in order to prove that EVERY woman is objectified, I was trying to talk about the current trends.
All I’m saying is Lily Allen’s video missed the mark because there were so many other things she could’ve done rather than a fake rap video with one scene alluding to Robin Thicke. If she was getting at Miley—that could’ve been done way more clearer, otherwise that video and song painted with a very broad brush decrying a part of rap culture and if mostly black women auditioned and that’s what your video became—so be it. But if people call you out for it, don’t act like those people’s feelings are trivial.
People try to say “this isn’t a race issue. Stop making everything about race.” No. Screw that noise because people are gonna keep pulling this bullcrap if they don’t see that what they’re doing is not helping any cause. It’s a frickin’ race issue because I’m tired of women of color being used by white women to make feminist statements. Tina Fey talked mess about Kim Kardashian just because full figures were becoming popular. White feminists talked mess on Beyonce just because she used the word “bitch” in a song, like no other artists have said that. White feminists talked mess on Nicki Minaj when she joined American Idol. White women went in on Lucy Liu when it was announced that she was taking the role—that had been predominately white male—of John Watson on the Sherlock drama on CBS. But let me be clear: I am not against Feminism. I am just tired of Latinas, African American women and Asian women being used a props to “prove a point” and then being told by society that “you’re not good enough for this role. you’re not beautiful enough for this magazine. Your hair needs to be like this. Your eyes need to be like this. Your skin needs to be like this.”
Make a video about that, Lily Allen. Otherwise, don’t sit all high and mighty on your morals and act like you’re doing anyone outside of white people a favor.
